err. 522: connection timed out

Electronic Installation

Completed 05/04/2020

No you have not found an actual internet connection error. This is the title of a small audio installation work that was the culmination of my imbedded instrument class at LSU.

I named this piece because the processing of my samples produces a mix of sound snippets, repeated grains, and other artifacts that remind me of the 1990’s dial up sounds, but less abrasive. As if a portion of the connection was made and the computer is still continually trying to display the material.

What did I code/build to make the sounds?

This piece is self contained within a vertically oriented speaker cabinet that houses all of the components. Turning the box around will make the power cable and circuit board mounting screws visible. Inside the box itself is a Raspberry Pi 0 running the Pure data patch that is the brains of this installation. As well as the necessary adapters to connect the top-facing speaker and front-facing internal piezo microphone. Once the installation is turned on, the computer loads four seperate audio files into its memory. These files are truncated versions of recordings of other works spanning my entire educational career up to this point. (a revision of Oh Me! Oh Life!, Stargazing, NameNotFound, and Almost Awake).

Once loaded the patch begins playing all of them simultaneously, but the playback levels, along with all other parameters, are automated so that you hear a mix of and one occasional melody line poke through. These signals are then sent to both a granular synthesizer which generates composite tones from the four recording, and a ring modulator which adds a slightly crunchy bit of distortion to the mix. At the end, a piezo microphone picks up the resonant frequencies that travel through the case and feed it back into the system to further build the complexity. a built in failsafe automatically shuts off the granular synthesizer in case the feedback volume grown too loud, and turns it back on once the volume has lowered.

This project is designed to run indefinitely once it has begun, here is a short sample of the first 5 minutes of audio once the project initializes.
